"a profession with a very BIG, BIG heart, a profession not for the weak-hearted and the wicked ones, that's Social Work" that's what Social Work and being in the realms of Social Work profession looks like to me. From what i have known, Social Work is a profession which focuses and gives emphasis on human development and human services. Social Work is a profession that seeks to understand and help all people from the different walks of life in the society especially those who are less fortunate and helpless. For so, Social Workers are quoted as the 'engineers of human development.'
Choosing Social Work for me is not that easy. First and foremost, the idea of taking Social Work came during the very last minute just before the enrollment period because of certain dilemmas i faced. But then deciding to choose Bachelor of Science in Social Work than other courses is i think a right decision for me. Since then, I really want to serve and help others. Maybe because of the fact that i was exposed by my mother to social work practices or it really runs through my blood having been experienced things of helping others during my elementary and high school years in my own little ways.
Second, i believed that through Social Work, i can be a part of making a difference in the community we have right now. Just like what i have read in a magazine few months ago, it was mentioned there that if you wish to make a difference, be a social worker. Maybe i was too enticed in making a difference or change or being a part of that change that can happen in our society. As i can say it, i had wished ti make a difference and i believed that i am taking the right path through a degree in social work.
Third, it was evident today that most of the youth will either choose a degree in business, economics, management, sciences, computer and industrial technology, nursin and engineering. Many will either choose to repair buildings than society, to improve business than human condition and many more and so i choose to be different by having a degree in Social Work.
Lastly, i see social work as more of a vocation than a profession. Vocation and profession is really synonymous but for me, vocation is deeper than profession for vocation goes by the will and determintation of the person plus his/her heart to work while profession is only a title of your current line of work, career or occupation. Social Work is a vocation because you have to do a lot of sacrifices in order to do the job excellently. You have to put your heart to the work to do it excellently. You have to go out of your home and comfort zone to help others in times of difficulties. You need to do things that might be unusual or bizarre to you. You need to have some kind of special values and different kinds of person with different personality and problems. But then, that's why i choose a degree in Social Work for me to learn the essential things that i need so that someday i can be an excellent professional Social Worker.
A vocation in helping other people help themselves than helping machines, buildings, business and other superficial and artificial things is i think one the most exciting thing a man can have and experience in his whole life time.
:)
